Odisha: Man sentenced to life for killing wife for dowry

Balasore, Dec 22 : Balasore District and Sessions Judge Asanta Kumar Das on Friday convicted a murder accused and sentenced him to life along with a penalty of Rs 10,000.
The court further ordered one year RI in the case of non-realization of the fine amount from the convict.
According to the prosecution, Alok Das, 36,36 of Khadigadia village under Simulia police station limits, was arrested by police in October 2016 on the charge of killing his wife, Malati Das, following an FIR lodged by the complainant, Ghanashyam Das.
The complainant, the brother of the deceased, had stated that the marriage of his sister was solemnized one year ago, and the accused was torturing his wife, Malati , physically and mentally soon after the wedding ceremony, demanding a dowry of Rs 1 lakh.
He said Malati was residing with them, deserting her matrimonial house. However, the accused took her along with him from their house a few days before the incident, assuring that he would not torture her.
But in the event of non-fulfillment of the cash demand, the accused killed her with the help of a sharp-edged weapon.
The accused was tried under sections of murder under the IPC and dowry torture, and the court, after examining the 16 witnesses and 8 exhibits, awarded him life imprisonment, Public Prosecutor Prasanta Mallick said.
