Elephant calf found dead; forest dept yet to ascertain cause of death

After a few weeks’ break, yet another elephant calf was found dead in the Dhuannali-Silingapada-Tamana jungle near Banapur under Balungaon forest division in Khordha district a jungle in Odisha on Wednesday evening. much to the dismay of animal lovers.

According to information, the age of the dead jumbo calf is estimated to be around one-and-a-half years. The reason behind the death of the elephant calf is yet to be ascertained.

On being informed, staff from the Balugaon forest division reached the spot and sent the carcass for post-mortem.

“Veterinary doctors have already conducted post-mortem on the body. The reason behind the death of the baby elephant will be known on receipt of the post-mortem report,” said forest officials.

It is worth mentioning here that frequent deaths of elephants have become a matter of grave concern for the Forest department as well as wildlife lovers. Over 600 elephants have died due to various reasons in the state during the last decade.
