Safdarjung passes buck on patient for delivering child on roadside

New Delhi, July 19:
A pregnant woman was forced to deliver in the open on the roadside outside the labour room of Centre-run Safdarjung hospital on Tuesday morning, after she was allegedly not allowed admission to the hospital.

A purported video capturing the incident has gone viral on social media, which was shot in the hospital premises.

The video showed a few women making a veil with saris to cover the patient, who delivered a child, while dozens of people watched as bystanders.

The video also showed a nurse coming from the hospital ward as the patient kept screaming and going inside with the newborn born child.

The presence of dustbins and blood can be noticed on the floor, where the woman was seen delivering the child.

The video was shot by two women who had come to the hospital and spotted the women in labour pain.

According to them, the 30-year-old patient came from Dadri district in an emergency on Monday.

However, she was denied admission to the hospital and was lying outside the Gynaecology ward for the whole Monday night, the woman who shot the video claimed.

Meanwhile, the hospital has issued a statement on the unfortunate incident. The hospital administration said the patient and her child are now admitted to the Gynaecology ward under the supervision of a team of six doctors. Both mother and child are said to be in stable condition.

However, the hospital administration refused to take any responsibility for the incident and blamed the patient for the incident instead.

“She (patient) was examined by the SR (Senior Resident Doctor) at 5:45 pm on July 18, 2022 and her condition was found to be 33+6 weeks gestation with preeclampsia in early labour. The patient was offered admission, but she did not return with the admission paper,” the statement read.

Meanwhile, the Delhi Commission of Women has taken suo motu cognisance of the incident. DCW Chief Swati Maliwal issued a notice to Safdarjung’s Medical Superintendent, asking for a detailed report on the matter.
