Indian weddings are filled with ancient and opulent customs that span an entire week, Over the years, people have given their own modern touch to the age-old traditions. Now, a video of a mother-in-law welcoming the groom is doing rounds on the internet.
Wondering what is so different about it? Well, along with the sweets, she welcomed him with cigarettes and paan. The video was shared by a food blogger, Joohi on Instagram.

The video opens up with a multitude of guests around the groom dressed in traditional attire. A short while later, the father-in-law is spotted giving his wife a cigarette. The bridegroom’s mother-in-law places the cigarette in his mouth. After that, the father of the bride lights the cigarette with a match. He turns to light a new matchstick after the first one blows away.
According to blogger Joohi K Patel, who was a guest at the wedding, this is a traditional custom in some villages in South Gujarat. She shared the video on Instagram and it quickly went viral. The unusual tradition surprised many netizens as smoking isn’t associated with weddings.
While some viewers were initially shocked by the sight, Joohi was quick to clarify that the groom doesn’t even smoke. In fact, the parents-in-law didn’t even light the cigarette – it was just part of the ritual.
The video has elicited mixed reactions from netizens, with some acknowledging the tradition’s ancient roots and others calling for an end to such customs. “Nonsense in the name of tradition,” a user remarked. “Bride jesi bhi mile, bas saas esi hi milni chahiye,” another user joked. “The self control to not take a puff .. i can see the stress on groom’s face,” a third user wrote.
