Gangtok, Feb 5 : Besides the Sikkim govenrment, the centre will also file a review petition in the Supreme Court regarding some observations made by the apex judiciary about the Sikimese Nepali community, a senior official of the state said on Sunday.
Union Law Minister Kiran Rijiju gave the assurance to Sikkim Chief Minister P S Tamand during a meeting in Delhi on the issue.
S D Dhakal, the secretary to the chief minister, said the centre will extend full support to the state government on the issue. The solicitor General of India would appear before the apex court to argue the case.
“The government of India is taking this matter seriously so as to find as early solution in the interest of the Sikkimese,” said Dhakal
Tamang, who left for Delhi earlier in the day, met Rijiju soon after arriving in the national capital.
The Sikkim government has already filed a review petition before the apex court to suitably address the matter in the larger interest of all the Sikkimese.
“Observations of the Apex Court had given the impression that the Sikkimese Nepalis are persons of foreign origin settled in Sikkim,” said Tamang.
The chief minister highlighted that Article 371F of the Indian constitution, which grants special powers to Sikkim, safeguards the rights of Sikkimese people.
The chief minister also submitted a memorandum to the Law Minister on the issue
