Priyanka condemns K’taka MLA’s rape remark
New Delhi: Amid growing clamor to take strict action against former Karnataka Assembly Speaker KR Ramesh Kumar over his rape remark, the Congress on Friday condemned the statement of its senior leader.
“I whole-heartedly condemn the statement made by KR Ramesh Kumar. It is inexplicable how anyone can ever utter such words, they are indefensible. Rape is a heinous crime. Full stop,” Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi said in a tweet.
The statement of the Congress leader comes hours after the BJP took a dig at the grand old party over the statement of its lawmaker from Karnataka.
Earlier in the day, BJP spokesperson Anil Baluni, at a press conference here referring to the Congress MLA’s remark, said, “It is a very shameful statement. It is the history of Congress, such remarks have been repeatedly made by them against women.” Endorsing his party colleague, former Union Minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore condemned the remarks made by the Congress lawmaker and said, “It is unacceptable.”
“He was a constitutional authority (former Assembly Speaker). He has trivialised crime against women,” said Union Minister Rajeev Chandrashekar.
Kumar has apologised for his “indifferent” and “negligent” comment and said he referred to a saying in English language and had no intention to insult women or bring ignominy to the Karnataka Assembly.
On Thursday, the senior Congress leader made the controversial comment against women during a discussion on farmers’ issues in the Assembly.
