Cuttack: In a bizarre incident, a woman allegedly declared her hearty and healthy husband as ‘dead’ in a bid to grab the compensation amount of Rs 5 lakh being provided by the Odisha government to the families of Balasore train accident victims.
The incident has been reported from Maniabandha village in Odisha’s Cuttack district. When her husband Bijay Datta came to learn about his wife Geetanjali Datta’s misdemeanor, he lodged a written complaint with the police. On the other hand, Geetanjali Datta is said to be on the run, fearing arrest.
According to reports, Geetanjali Datta and her husband Bijay Datta have been living separately for the past 13 years. However, Geetanjali reportedly used to lodge false complaints against Bijay in order to harass him.
Recently, Bijay discovered that Geetanjali had traveled to Balasore with the intention of fraudulently claiming the ex-gratia amount provided by the state government.
Meanwhile, Bijay came to know that Geetanjali had traveled all the way to Balasore to fraudulently avail the compensation amount provided by the state government for the kin of the deceased. She tried to show Bijay as ‘dead’ and tried to grab compensation.
However, she had to return empty-handed after failing to furnish the necessary documents to support her claims. After learning about her fraudulent tactics, Bijay lodged a written complaint against his wife. He has demanded stringent action against Geetanjali as per law.
Geetanjali is not the sole fraudster in this case as reports of several people filing false claims for compensation have come to light in the last few days. As the matter is of grave concern, Odisha Chief Secretary Pradeep Kumar Jena has urged the Railway authorities to take stringent action against anyone found filing false claims for compensation.
