Food Poisoning Outbreak Afflicts 50 Female Students in Odisha Hostel
Bhubaneswar: At least 50 female students from the Kasturba Gandhi Girls Hostel in the Lamtaput area of Odisha’s Koraput district fell seriously ill due to suspected food poisoning. The unfortunate incident unfolded on Sunday night after the students consumed contaminated food for dinner.
Reports indicate that shortly after having their evening meal, the hostel residents began experiencing symptoms of food poisoning, including diarrhea, vomiting, and severe stomach ache.
In response to the alarming situation, a rapid intervention took place as a team of five doctors from the Lamtaput Community Health Centre (CHC) promptly reached the hostel. They initiated immediate medical treatment for the affected students. Fortunately, 40 students showed signs of recovery after receiving preliminary treatment. However, the severity of the condition prompted the admission of the remaining students to a local healthcare facility for more comprehensive care.
While investigations are ongoing, doctors strongly suspect that the outbreak of illness among the students is a result of food poisoning. To ascertain the cause and identify the contaminated food source, a team of doctors from Koraput is anticipated to visit the hostel on Monday. During their visit, food samples will be collected for detailed examination.
The incident has raised concerns about the safety and hygiene practices in the hostel’s food preparation and distribution system. Authorities are expected to conduct a thorough investigation to prevent any recurrence of such incidents and ensure the well-being of the students residing in the Kasturba Gandhi Girls Hostel.
