Outbreak of Diarrhoea in Hirakud Raises Concerns Over Contaminated Water Supply

Sambalpur: In a tragic turn of events, Hirakud in Sambalpur district finds itself grappling with a sudden outbreak of diarrhoea, claiming the life of one individual and affecting the lives of 49 others who are currently undergoing treatment. The situation has escalated to the extent that ten individuals have been urgently transferred to Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) as their condition worsened.

Authorities from the District Health Department have pointed to contaminated drinking water as the primary culprit behind this alarming health crisis. The affected areas, including Gurudwarapada, Goudapada, Kalopada, Machhapada, and New Market Colony, have been identified as hotspots for the spread of diarrhoea.

A report submitted by the Chief District Medical Officer to the District Collector has shed light on the inadequate water treatment measures, citing it as a significant factor contributing to the rampant spread of the disease. Water samples have been collected from various locations for further analysis, indicating a pressing need for immediate action.

To mitigate the situation, health department officials have initiated door-to-door visits to raise awareness among residents about the importance of sanitation and safe drinking water practices. Additionally, a mobile health unit has been deployed to monitor the situation closely and prevent further escalation of the outbreak.

Residents, however, have voiced their frustrations, holding the district administration accountable for the recurring health crisis. Allegations have been made regarding damaged pipelines laid by the Public Health Department during road repair works. Residents claim that these damaged pipelines are contaminating the drinking water supply, leading to the outbreak of diarrhea. Despite numerous appeals to the administration for pipeline repairs, no substantial action has been taken, exacerbating the situation.

This is not the first time Hirakud has been plagued by water-borne diseases. Just six months ago, a similar outbreak occurred due to the consumption of contaminated water. The recurrence of such crises underscores the urgent need for comprehensive measures to address the underlying issues in the water supply infrastructure.

In the meantime, residents in the affected areas have been advised to consume only boiled water as a precautionary measure against contracting diarrhoea.

As authorities grapple with containing the outbreak and addressing the root causes, the health and well-being of Hirakud’s residents hang in the balance, highlighting the critical importance of ensuring access to clean and safe drinking water for all communities.
