Elephant Herd Enters SMC Area, Damages Crop, Vegetables

Sambalpur, Dec 27: An elephant herd of 20 entered the Sambalpur Municipal Corporation (SMC) area late night on Sunday and damaged crops.

Sources said the herd entered Ward No 1 of Brahmapura area and damaged crops and vegetables causing huge loss to the farmers. The village is situated on the bank of river Mahanadi for which farmers go for improved cultivation- both paddy and vegetables.

The farmers have demanded to restrict the entry of elephants to prevent crop loss. The elephant menace of late has emerged as a massive problem for the farmers, especially during the crop cutting season.
