Two dies in elephant attack in Odisha

Bhubaneswar, May 27: Two persons including an eight-year-old minor girl were trampled to death by wild elephants in two different places in Odisha on Saturday.

While an eight-year-old girl was trampled to death at Singakhunta Chitra Saralia village under Soro block in Balasore district a labourer was crushed to death by an elephant on the Kamaguru-Mayurjhalia road under Ranapur block in Nayagarha district.


Sources said a herd of eight elephants entered into the Singakhunta village late Saturday night. When the family saw an elephant on their backyard, they tried to drive it out. Annoyed with it, the elephant entered into the house and trampled upon the girl while she was sleeping.


The family members rushed her to hospital, but the doctors declared her dead.
In the second incident elephant attacked three labourers while they were on their way to work on bi-cycles on the Kamaguru-Mayurjhalia road under Ranapur block.
While two of the labourers managed to escape, the third one was crushed to death.
Police identified the deceased as S Behera of Natim village under Ranapur block of Nayagarh district.
