Mahanadi, Brahamani river water polluted: Minister

Bhubaneswar, March 14: The Mahanadi and Brahamani river water are polluted due to discharge of waste water into the rivers in urban areas, Forest, Environment and Climate change Minister Pradip Kumar Amat told the Odisha Assembly on Tuesday.

Replying to a question of Nityananda Ganda (BJP), the Minister said a survey conducted by the
State Pollution Control Board during January to December 2022 found the BOD and TC level
above the prescribed parametre in 22 places of Mahanadi and Brahamani river.

Amat said the Municipal authorities and the Housing and Urban Development department have directed to set up Sewage Treatment Plants for purification of waste water.

At present 5 STP at Bhubaneswar, three in Cuttack , Two in Puri and one each at Talcher and Sambalpur have been set up.

In addition to it 119 Septage Treatment Plant (SeTP) in 115 urban areas were set up out of which 110 SeTP have been made operational.

The minister said the pollution level in water would be reduced after the operational of these projects
