Odisha Government Takes Proactive Measures to Combat Potential COVID-19 Surge

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has issued a directive to all hospital authorities across the state to address the possibility of a surge in COVID-19 cases. The emphasis is on remaining vigilant and implementing proactive measures to effectively tackle any potential increase in infections.

The State Health Department, in a letter addressed to all Chief District Medical Officers (CDMOs), Medical Colleges, and Capital Hospital authorities, has outlined key steps to be taken in the face of a potential resurgence of COVID-19.

One of the primary directives is to enhance Influenza-Like Illness/Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (ILI/SARI) surveillance. The directive specifies the importance of making testing readily available in all health centers throughout the state. In case of positive cases, strict adherence to the home isolation protocol is mandated, with the provision of necessary treatment support.

Hospital authorities are instructed to ensure dedicated beds, especially those equipped with oxygen support, for potential admissions. This aligns with the recommended management protocol for COVID-19 cases. The directive also discourages unnecessary referrals and emphasizes the importance of reporting no shortages in testing and treatment facilities at the district and sub-district levels.

The State Health Department underscores the need for health institutions to coordinate closely with district administration for Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) and Behavioral Change Communication (BCC) activities. These efforts aim to raise community awareness, emphasizing the adoption of COVID-19-appropriate behavior, especially among symptomatic individuals, the elderly, and vulnerable populations.

Additionally, the directive stresses the importance of ensuring an ample supply of testing kits, reagents, drugs, and consumables to effectively manage potential COVID-19 situations. Coordination with the Odisha State Medical Corporation Limited (OSMCL) is highlighted for seamless procurement and distribution.

Recognizing the critical role of healthcare providers and laboratory personnel, the government emphasizes training and capacity building. Hospitals are instructed to have a contingency plan in place, prepared to address any situation that may arise.

As the Odisha government takes these proactive steps, it reinforces its commitment to public health and the well-being of its citizens, prioritizing a swift and effective response to potential challenges posed by the ongoing pandemic.
