Puri administration to rehabilitate beggars, mentally retarded persons

Puri,July 4: The Puri district administration has resolved to rescue and rehabilitate a large number of beggars and mentally retarded persons moving in the pilgrim town in a precarious condition.

The district social Security officer has formed a team which will scan the town and rescue beggars, mentally unsound and physically handicapped persons who have come to Puri during the festival and are seen roaming in the town and suburb.
District social Security officer Subhransu Sekhar Maharana told media persons on Monday that there has been a significant increase in the number of mentally retarded persons and beggars in the town after the rath yatra.

To eradicate this social and humanitarian problem a special drive will be conducted across the town from Thursday.
He appealed to the NGO, social activists and public to share the location of such persons moving in their locality and their condition to the department on 9348056007 and 9124654072.

Sidharth Ray the advisor of this project has urged the residents to cooperate with administration .

Many beggars and differently able persons too throng Puri during the car festival and most of them remain in the town even after the festival is over

After loitering in the town for some time they die. This is a serious humanitarian problem and for a long time many social activists were demanding to address it.
