Factors that Modi and the BJP failed to harp on

Out of many reasons behind why the BJP lost its Southern strong hold some analysts find some issues in the style of the campaigning of the Bharatiya Janata Party which let it to nose dive in Karnataka 2023 Assembly polls.

One reason behind some analysts believe that the Lingayat votes got badly split after the BJP kept its tall leader from the same community BS Yadiyurappa, the former chief minister who even kept out of focus during the entire campaign.

The gap that could not be compensated even by the relentless campaign by the Prime Minister Modi and the Home Minister Amit Shah.

Their rallies even could not elicit the desired benefit for the party including 26 road shows by Modi. Modi somewhere failed to realize that the local issues matter a lot. Like the Hijab ban in Karnataka.

So, what are the factors that likely led to BJP’s defeat in the party’s southern stronghold?

All said and done BJP overlooked the fact that BS is a mass leader and a four time chief minister being a strong man among the Lingayat community. Which obviously disturbed a major, major vote share of the above community.

Barring BS from the campaign also was a crucial lapse by the saffron think-tanks.

And not to be easily forgotten that, Prime Minister Modi’s choice of terminologies also mattered like use of diatribes against Mallikarjun  Karge as a ‘poisonous’ snake did go well with the vast vote bank of the community that Kharge belonged to.

While the Congress planned its campaign around local, civic issues and cornered the incumbent government over poor implementation of welfare schemes, the BJP’s campaign was largely reactive.

Corruption, law and order allegations made by the  Congress struck the right chord among the voters.
