Odisha: NHRC closes case relating to eating of human flesh by two men during funeral ritual

Kendrapara(Odisha), Oct 22 (UNI) National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has closed a case relating to eating of flesh of a dead woman by two men during funeral ritual as the case is being dealt by court of law.

NHRC closed the case on October 19 last after Human Rights Lawyer and the petitioner Radhakanta Tripathy, apprised the rights body about it.

Tripathy in a petition in July last alleged that two persons reportedly ate the flesh of Madhismita Singh, a 25-year old dead woman of Bandhasahi village at the village crematorium in Mayurbhanj district on July, 12, 2023 during cremation and sought stern action against the accused.

As per the allegation the accused identified as Sundar Mohan Singh (58) and Narendra Singh (25) of Dantuni village took away a portion of the body from the funeral pyre and ate it as a Practice of Witch craft and sorcery.

Pursuant to the direction of the Commission, an inquiry was conducted into the incident . The inquiry revealed that Madhusmita Singh died on July 11, 2023.

The family members of the deceased performed the cremation at the village burial ground. When cremation was going on, the villagers and family members of the deceased left the place.

After kin’s of the deceased left Sunder and Narender took a part of the body from the pyre, and ate it.

Police registered a case on the basis of a written complainant by the mother of the deceased and submitted a chargesheet.

The Commision on October 19 last said since legal action has been taken in the matter, no further intervention by the Commission is required and closed the case.
