Odisha: Man sentenced to life imprisonment for killing his wife on dowry issue

Balasore, Oct 31 : Special Judge OPID and Additional sessions judge Biswajit Das on Tuesday awarded life imprisonment to a man for killing his wife on dowry issue.
The judge also imposed a fine of Rs 5000 on the convict and ordered that in default of penalty realization, he would serve another one year jail term.
According to the prosecution, one Tapas Pradhan of Nuagaon village under Industrial police station had married to Sarojini Mohanty of Probadhpur village under Basudevpur police station of Bhadrak.
The woman died while undergoing treatment for burn injuries in a private hospital in Bhubaneswar.
Her father Purna Chandra Mohanty lodged an FIR with police on March,10, 2021 alleging that her daughter was burnt to death by the accused son-in –law Tapas Pradhan
According to the complainant his daughter was burnt by pouring kerosene on her and locking the door from outside as he couldn’t fulfill more dowry demands made by the accused.
The tragic incident took place on the night of February 21, 2021. The neighbours hearing her scream brought her to the hospital for treatment.
However, the lady succumbed to burn injuries during treatment.
“The accused Pradhan was tried under 498(A),302 of IPC and 4 DP Act .The court after examining 14 witnesses and 20 exhibits sentenced him to life imprisonment along with Rs 5,000 fine, Special Public Prosecutor, Pranab Panda said.
