It has gone bold in the calendar of the country when three decades ago a mild storm crept through the fortified walls of the National Stock Exchange and ripped apart the inner precincts to unravel a huge scam.

The scribe who did it has not yet paled from many memories that was Sucheta Dalal who in a single handed pursuit took the Bull by the horn and exposed Harshad Mehta’s black empire.

It was a big, big challenge and at that time when Bombay Stock Exchange was on a tight rope and Dalal got the tips from within and outside to take on the mighty broker of India.

Sucheta still recalls through her interviews to the media how she had to tip-toe through the undulation of the country’s SE and blow the lid off.

It was all about the massive and improper handling and manipulations of the shares that rocked the bottom. It was in April 23 1992.

It was no mere task but her dogged pursuits paid dividends when the rat smelled about a massive manipulation to the tune of Rs 500 crores

A daring allegation and hardly anybody had any inkling that such a million dollar wrong transaction was brewing within the walls.

Everything was being done papered by secrecy and was tough to get an iota of it on papers. Mind it it were all about government securities escaping the vigils of the equity markets.

So Sucheta was literally alone as if chasing a chimera but at last she could shape things out of the shadows and which at last led to Harshad’s arrest.
