GI Registry To Decide On Recognition For Dhenkanal’s Magji

Bhubaneswar: The consultative group of experts of Geographical Indications (GI) Registry, Chennai is to evaluate the application of Odisha University of Agriculture & Technology (OUAT) towards recognition for Dhenkanal’s Magji.

Magji, a sweet made of buffalo milk cheese, is unique to Gondia block of Dhenkanal and being made for over 100 years now. The OUAT had filed an application in 2020 seeking GI tag for the food product.

Reportedly, preliminary examination of Magji chutney for GI tag has been completed. Based on recommendations of the consultative group and after necessary compliances to conditions, the application will be accepted and published for public to file opposition. If no opposition is received, the GI will be registered.
