Kanpur Violence: 29 Arrested, Police Find Documents Linked To PFI

Kanpur, June 6: A total of 29 accused allegedly responsible for the violence and stone pelting in Kanpur on Friday have been arrested. Police also have registered 3 FIRs against over 1,000 unknown persons for rioting and violence.

Kanpur Police have arrested a total of 29 people involved in the violence that erupted in the city’s Parade Chowk area on Friday, June 3. The local Muslim leader, Hayat Zafar Hashmi, was identified by the police as the main conspirator behind the violence.

Police said Hayat Zafar Hashmi, who is the national president of the Maulana Muhammad Jauhar Ali Fans Association, called for the market shutdown to protest the remarks made about Prophet Mohammed by BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma during a TV news debate.

Hashmi allegedly incited people, which led to stone-pelting and clashes between two groups. Over 39 people, including multiple police personnel, were injured due to this. He has been detained and taken in for questioning.

Hayat Zafar Hashmi was booked in nine cases between 2015 and 2019. Two more cases were registered against him in connection with the violence that erupted in Kanpur on Friday.

Meanwhile, four arrested accused- Zafar Hashmi, Ahmad Khan, Mohammad Rahil, and Mohammad Suffian- have been sent to 14-day judicial custody on Sunday, June 5.

The Kanpur Police will seek custody of the four accused on Monday.
