1993 Mumbai serial blasts accused held in UAE

New Delhi, Feb 5 : Indian security agencies have apprehended one of the prime accused in the 1993 Mumbai serial bombings, Abu Bakar Abdul Gafur Shaikh, in the UAE after nearly three decades of manhunt, a top official told UNI on Saturday. Abu Bakar, a close aide of the 1993 attack mastermind Dawood Ibrahim, was a key conspirator in the blasts which left 257 dead on March 12, 1993. In one of the biggest terror attacks on India, a series of 12 blasts at different locations rocked Mumbai (then Bombay).

Bakar was involved in arms and explosives training in PoK and in conspiracy and planning of the blasts at Dawood Ibrahim’s residence in Dubai, sources said. The Mumbai blasts were coordi Gnated by Dawood Ibrahim who was involved in planning and execution of the bombings through his subordinates Tiger Memon and Yakub Memon. Bakar, who has business interests in Dubai, has been involved in smuggling of gold and electronics items from Gulf countries to Mumbai, sources said. He is likely to be extradited to India, however, there is no immediate development in this regard, highly placed sources said.
