Leaders from Bihar meet PM to demand caste census

New Delhi : A delegation of leaders of different parties from Bihar, including Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav, met Prime Minister Narendra Modi to demand a caste-based census.

The delegation comprising leaders of ten political parties in Bihar, included former chief minister Jitan Ram Manjhi.

Talking to media ahead of the meeting, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav said such a census would the help government in formulating better schemes.

“It will benefit people not just from Bihar, but people from the whole country,” Yadav said.

The demand for a caste-based census has come from several quarters for a count of the people in different backward classes.

Apart from the leaders from Bihar, Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav and BJP ally Apna Dal’s Anupriya Patel are among those who have asked for it.

The demand was also raised by several political parties during a debate on a constitutional amendment bill to restore states’ power to have their own OBC lists in the recently concluded Monsoon Session.
