Ex-Punjab DGP Mohd Izhar Alam passes away

Chandigarh, Jul 6 : Padma Shri awardee former Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Mohd Izhar Alam passed away due to cardiac arrest at a private hospital in Mohali on Tuesday morning.He was 72 and survived by his wife, three sons and two daughters.The 1972-batch IPS officer was awarded Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian honour, by the Union Government in 1987.After his retirement, Alam joined the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) in November, 2009 and was appointed chairman of the Punjab Wakf Board.

His wife Farzana won the Malerkotla assembly seat on the SAD ticket, defeating Congress leader Razia Sultana in 2012 elections.Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh condoled the demise of the former DGP. In a condolence message, the Chief Minister said, “I am saddened to learn about the death of Mohd Izhar Alam, who also served as Chairman, Punjab Wakf Board.”
