Hayashi was appointed the new Foreign Minister two weeks ago. The talks come more than a month after Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with new Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida to congratulate him on assuming charge as the Prime Minister of Japan.

During the telephone talks between the two prime ministers, the two sides had discussed on strengthening the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership and to enhance cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region. Amid increased focus on the Indo-Pacific region, Japan is to host a meeting of the QUAD group next year.
