Chant of controversial slogans: Delhi Police files case

New Delhi : The Delhi Police has registered a case against unknown persons in connection with chanting of some controversial slogans at a demonstration in Jantar Mantar here yesterday.

BJP leader Ashwini Upadhyay, who had organised the said protest, however, said Delhi Police should test the authenticity of the video first.

The FIR was filed as a video went viral purportedly showing a group of protesters raising communal slogans.

The slogans were ostensibly chanted during an event — ‘Colonial Laws and Make Uniform Laws’ — organised by Supreme Court lawyer and former spokesperson of Delhi unit of BJP Ashwini Upadhyay. Mr Upadhyay, however, claimed that he had nothing to do with the video and his protest was focused on abolishing British laws.

According to Delhi Police, the event did not have permission.

The nature of the slogans witnessed in the video drew ire from various sections, including political leaders.

“What a disgrace to read of an unauthorised BJP demonstration where communal slogans and hate speech were voiced. Expecting exemplary action from Delhi police. Only stern action and condign punishment will prevent such misbehaviour,” Congress leader Shashi Tharoor tweeted.

Mr Upadhyay, however, later issued a statement saying that the video was being misused and also challenged the authenticity of the video.

“A video is viral on social media, in which a person is giving a communal speech. The video is being misused to malign me. I do not know any of these people, nor did I call them,” Mr Upadhyay said in a letter to Delhi police.

“I request you to verify the authenticity of this video, and when and where it was made. If it is true, take action against the perpetrators, if not, take action against those who shared it on social media,” Mr Upadhyay added.

He also urged Police to ensure the video was not shared till its authenticity is proven.
