Kerala CM writes to PM for exempting tax on medicine for treatment of Spinal Muscular Atrophy

Thiruvananthapuram, Jul 9 : Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Friday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take steps to provide tax exemption to imported medicine required for the treatment of Spinal Muscular Atrophy.

In a letter to the Prime Minister, the Chief Minister requested to waive off GST against imported medicine required to treat the rare Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA).The Chief Minister wrote the letter following the raising of Rs 18 crore through crowdfunding for the treatment of one-and-a-half-year-old Muhammed in Kannur in Kerala, who suffers from SMA.Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a humanitarian move, has directed to waive off Rs 6 crore as a GST amount against Rs 16 crore of imported medicines that are required to treat a child in Mumbai, the Chief Minister mentioned
