Bhubaneswar: A team of Vigilance officials in Odisha apprehended an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of Police for allegedly accepting a bribe from a person in Nabarangpur district. The accused, identified as Simanchal Moharana from Dabugaon Police Station, was caught red-handed while demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs. 5000 from a complainant.
The bribe was reportedly solicited by Moharana in exchange for showing leniency and offering assistance in a case registered against the complainant earlier at the Dabugaon police station. However, upon the intervention of Odisha Vigilance, Moharana was apprehended in the act.
Upon spotting the Vigilance officials, Moharana attempted to dispose of the bribe money by throwing it into the Police Station Malkhana. However, the authorities swiftly recovered and seized the money from the Malkhana. Furthermore, chemical tests conducted on Moharana’s hands confirmed his involvement in accepting the bribe.
In response to the apprehension, Koraput Vigilance registered a case against Moharana under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018. The investigation into the matter is ongoing, with simultaneous searches being conducted at two locations associated with Moharana from the angle of disproportionate assets.
