Force Be With You, Always: Kenobi Series Date Out
Los Angeles, Feb 10: For years “Star Wars” fans have been waiting to see the series on the legendary Jedi master. After the concept of the series was being teased for years, Ewan McGregor will finally return as Obi Wan Kenobi in a world post Order 66 now controlled by the Galactic Empire.
Fresh off the finale of “The Book of Boba Fett”, Disney + has released the date for the release of the Obi Wan series which will release on May 25. The limited series is set to take place 10 years after the tragic events of Star Wars Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith, where Kenobi fought and defeated his former apprentice and best friend, Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) who fell to the dark side and became the Emperor’s apprentice and his second, the dreaded Sith Lord Darth Vader. With most Jedi wiped out and any survivors and sympathizers now being declared enemies of the Galaxy, the story takes place on Tatooine as Obi Wan is living in hiding as a hermit while watching over Anakin Skywalker’s son, Luke Skywalker who he would eventually grow to mentor in “A New Hope” and would defeat his father.
Deborah Chow, who made her debut in the Star Wars universe with Chapter 3 of The Mandalorian, is expected to direct the entire series, with Joby Harold penning the scripts. In a featurette that was released last year, Chow described the series as “quite a dark time that we’re coming into with him. Just being a Jedi, it’s not safe. There’s Jedi hunters out there”. This comment sparked speculation that one of the members of the cast may be playing a character that’s tracking down the Jedi who survived Order 66. Despite the apparent threat to his safety, McGregor said that Kenobi “has one task left, to keep Luke safe”. Though, Vader and Kenobi would not meet again till the events of “A New Hope”, Kenobi has already said that Darth Vader will be present in the series, though to what extent is unknown. In an interview with Forbes, McGregor teased that he and Christensen did “scenes together again as Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker”.
This has led many people to wonder whether Obi-Wan Kenobi will feature flashbacks to their time in the Jedi Order and perhaps even flashbacks or even voiceovers from moments in the Clone Wars animated series. Starring in the series alongside Ewan McGregor and Hayden ChristensenMoses Ingram, Joel Edgerton, Bonnie Piesse, Kumail Nanjiani, Indira Varma, Rupert Friend, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Sung Kang, Simone Kessell and Benny Safdie. As of now Disney + has been very tight lipped on the series, though it is a limited production being only a six episode production covering the story of an intermediate period in the life of Kenobi post Episode 3 and pre Episode 4. Obi-Wan Kenobi is part of a growing collection of live-action Star Wars shows produced for Disney’s streaming service. These kicked off with 2019’s The Mandalorian, which was followed by The Book of Boba Fett in late 2021. Other shows announced include Andor, following Rogue One’s Cassian Andor, Ahsoka, Lando, and The Acolyte, many of which are set to tell interconnected stories with similar characters re-appearing between them.
