AAP continues its winning streak in Rajinder Nagar, wins bypoll
New Delhi, June 26 : Aam Aadmi Party has continued its winning streak in the Rajinder Nagar constituency for the third time.
Party’s candidate Durgesh Pathak has emerged victorious in the by-election of the constituency after Election Commission of India declared results on Sunday.
Pathak has won the electoral battle by 11,468 votes with a voting share of 55.78 per cent. Meanwhile, Bharatiya Janata Party came second with 39.91 per cent of vote share.
The saffron party had fielded Rajesh Bhatia in the election who was able to score 28,851 votes.
The Congress had also contested the election but performed poorly in the bypoll. Its candidate Prem Lata garneted on 2,014 votes while the party’s vote share in the total remained 2.79 per cent.
A total of 545 votes went to the NOTA’s account in this election.
The by-election at Rajinder Nagar was conducted after AAP leader Raghav Chadha vacated the seat to become a Rajya Sabha member from Punjab. He was elected to the upper house of the parliament in March.
AAP has won this seat for the third consecutive assembly election. Vijender Garg Vijay had won the seat in 2015 and it was retained by the party in the 2020 assembly polls with Raghav Chadha.
The counting of votes began Sunday morning. According to the ECI’s data, the constituency had recorded a voter turnout of 43.75% in the by-poll that occurred on Thursday. The voting was held from 7 am to 6 pm, and Covid patients were allowed to vote in the last hour after they wore full PPE kits.
