Parliament passes Bill to set up Sindhu Central University in Ladakh
New Delhi : Rajya Sabha on Monday passed the Central Universities (Amendment) Bill, 2021 paving the way for setting up a central university in the newly-formed Union Territory of Ladakh.
The bill was passed by voice vote amid walkout by Opposition parties Congress, TMC and DMK.
Lok Sabha had passed the bill last week.
Replying to the discussion on the bill, Minister for Education and Skill Development & Entrepreneurship Dharmendra Pradhan said that the region of Leh and Ladakh is the priority area for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and urged the members present in the House to pass the bill.
The proposed university has been named as Sindhu Central University.
Pradhan said that the proposed university will be a quality institution where 2,500 students would study there. He also assured that it will not be based on a commercial model.
“We are committed to building a quality institution,” he said.
