Pakistan: Shehbaz Holds Meeting With Leading Economists
Islamabad, April 12: Pakistan’s new Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday called an urgent meeting with leading economists, to discuss in detail the dire economic situation being faced by the country, Express Tribune reported.
The purpose of the meeting was to help the government take important decisions relating to economic and financial measures to help stabalise the economy. Soon after taking charge as the Prime Minister, Shehbaz announced a six-day work week for government offices, starting at 8 am instead of 10 am.
Sharif issued a series of orders for the implementation of his announcements made in the National Assembly on Monday, especially related to public relief programs, including immediate implementation for 10 per cent increase in pension and raising minimum wage to Rs25,000 and strict monitoring of shops during Ramazan to ensure supply of quality and affordable goods.
In his maiden address as prime minister in the National Assembly, Shehbaz said the previous PTI-led government left the country’s economy in tatters with the current account deficit and other economic indicators “worsening” which need to be addressed urgently.
