“Amid Spike In Covid”, Cancel Rallies, Cong Tells PM
New Delhi, Jan 5 : The Congress on Wednesday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take a call on public rallies amid a sharp spike in Covid-19 cases in the country.
“The health of people is more important than winning or losing elections for us. We have set an example. We urge the Prime Minister to take a call on public rallies,” Congress spokesperson Gourav Vallabh said.
He was responding to a question over the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee’s letter to the Election Commission urging to cancel major rallies in the state.
Asked about the Congress stand on other poll-bound states, Vallabh said: “We are talking stock of the situation in other states also. We are looking into the health aspects and accordingly a decision will be taken.”
Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, Goa, Punjab, Uttarakhand and Manipur are due this year.
According to the Union Health Ministry, India has recorded 58,087 new Covid-19 cases and 534 deaths.
