Bhubaneswar: A Class X boy student allegedly died by suicide in the hostel of Viswatma School at Kamakshinagar. The heartbreaking event occurred just hours before the commencement of the annual High School Certificate (HSC) examinations. The deceased, identified as Binayak Pradhan from Taliudar village in Balangir, was slated to appear for the exam at Bhagaban Bidya Mandir examination center in Khujenpali, starting Tuesday.
Reports indicate that other inmates of the hostel discovered Binayak hanging inside the washroom early in the morning and promptly informed the school authorities. Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, doctors declared him dead upon arrival.
Hostel warden Sambit Kumar, speaking to the media, expressed deep sorrow over the incident. Describing Binayak as a meritorious student, he emphasized that there was never any undue pressure exerted on the students. “The students had brought him down and tried to revive him. We are unable to comprehend why he took the extreme step. It is for the first time that such an incident has been reported in the school,” Kumar stated.
While initial speculation points to exam pressure as a possible trigger for Binayak’s tragic decision, his family members have placed the blame on the school authorities for his untimely demise. This heartbreaking incident has cast a pall over the entire community, particularly amidst the backdrop of the ongoing HSC examinations, which involve over 5 lakh students across Odisha.
The loss of Binayak Pradhan serves as a poignant reminder of the mental health challenges faced by students, especially during periods of academic stress. It underscores the urgent need for schools and educational institutions to prioritize the emotional well-being of their students and provide robust support systems to help them navigate through difficult times.
As investigations into the circumstances surrounding Binayak’s death unfold, authorities and stakeholders must come together to address the root causes of such tragedies and implement preventive measures to safeguard the mental health of students. The untimely loss of a promising young life like Binayak’s is a stark reminder of the importance of fostering a compassionate and supportive environment within educational institutions.
