Chhattisgarh, October 17: An unprecedented incident has taken place in Chhattisgarh, which is a historic moment in the country’s anti-Maoist campaign. A grand public ceremony will be held in Jagdalpur, Chhattisgarh at 11 am tomorrow, where about 200 Maoists will surrender their weapons and return to normal life.
Out of this group, more than 140 are associated with the Dandakaranya Special Zonal Committee and more than 50 are from North Bastar Division.
This includes a well-known Maoist leader, Rupesh, who is allegedly involved in important incidents in the Dandakaranya area.
The Chhattisgarh Chief Minister will preside over the ceremony and it is being considered a major success in the constitutional peace process.
The Chhattisgarh government is implementing a rehabilitation programme to bring the Maoists back into the mainstream, providing them financial assistance, livelihood training and security.
The local administration and senior officials have described it as a “game-changing move”.
A heavy security presence has been deployed at the scene. The move could encourage other Maoists to take up a new life in the coming days.
