Odisha Mourns the Loss of Veteran Politician V Sugnana Kumari Deo: A Tribute to Her Illustrious Career

Bhubaneswar: The political landscape of Odisha is shrouded in grief as news spreads of the passing of veteran politician and ten-time MLA, V Sugnana Kumari Deo. The esteemed leader, aged 87, breathed her last at a private hospital in Chennai after bravely battling a prolonged illness.

In recent days, Deo had been receiving treatment for her ailment, drawing the concern of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, who personally visited her at the hospital in Chennai. Accompanied by several dignitaries including V Kartik Pandian, Usha Devi, Bikram Keshari Arukha, and Pranab Prakash Das, the Chief Minister expressed his support and fervently prayed for her recovery.

Deo, affectionately known as the queen of the erstwhile princely State of Khallikote, embarked on her political journey in 1961 when she was first elected to the Odisha Assembly from the Khalikote constituency. Over the years, she solidified her legacy by securing victory eight times from Khalikote and twice from Kabisuryanagar in Ganjam district.

Born on August 5, 1937, in Ganjam, Deo was not only a politician but also a revered social activist. Her dedication to public service and unwavering commitment to her constituents earned her widespread admiration and respect.

Daughter of Raja RVM Niladri Deo and wife of Purunchandra Mardaraj Deo, Sugnana Kumari Deo made significant contributions to the legislative process, serving as an MLA from 1974 to 2019. Despite her numerous accomplishments, she humbly declined offers of a Cabinet berth, prioritizing her role as a dedicated representative of the people.

As the state mourns her loss, preparations are underway to transport her mortal remains to Bhubaneswar via special aircraft from Chennai. Her final journey will culminate in Khalikote, where she will be accorded the last rites, bidding farewell to a stalwart leader whose impact will forever resonate in the hearts of the people of Odisha.
