Balangir: High tension unfolded at Bhima Bhoi Medical College and Hospital (MCH) in Odisha’s Balangir district when attendants of a patient reportedly thrashed an on-duty doctor accused of being intoxicated on Monday night. The incident occurred after the patient, Niku Barik, experienced severe pain and went unattended for over three hours, eventually leading to his death.
Niku was admitted to the medicine ward around 5 pm, where the initial doctor informed the family about administering saline and an injection. When Niku complained of pain at 8 pm, there was no doctor available for over three hours. The subsequent doctor arrived at 11 pm, declaring the patient dead. Upon questioning, he claimed to have been in the ICU, but the family soon realized he was allegedly inebriated, prompting them to assault the doctor.
Security guards intervened to rescue the doctor, while the family demands action against him. The hospital authorities have not yet commented on the matter. The incident raises concerns about the quality of patient care and the conduct of medical professionals at the hospital.
