Opposition Congress Walks Out as Odisha Governor’s Address Sparks Controversy
Bhubaneswar: The budget session of the Odisha Assembly kicked off on Monday with a controversial address by Governor Rabhubar Das, leading to a walkout by members of the opposition Congress. Accusing the state government of using the Governor’s speech as a platform for self-praise, Congress members expressed dissatisfaction with the content and duration of the address.
Governor Rabhubar Das, in his maiden address to the Assembly since taking office, spoke for nearly two hours, outlining the achievements and initiatives of the state government. However, the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader, Narasingha Mishra, claimed that the address was a display of the government using the Governor to applaud its own actions.
Addressing reporters outside the House, Mishra criticized the lengthy speech, stating that Governors typically read speeches prepared by the state government. He drew a historical analogy, likening the situation to ancient kings who employed individuals to praise them. Mishra expressed disappointment in the alleged misuse of the Governor’s role for self-praise.
Mishra went on to challenge the accuracy of the information presented in the Governor’s speech, claiming that some details were incorrect. He specifically pointed out discrepancies related to the Lower Suktel irrigation project, inaugurated by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on January 3. According to Mishra, during the inauguration, he had informed the Chief Minister that the project was incomplete. However, the Governor’s speech reportedly presented a different narrative, stating that the Lower Suktel Project had been inaugurated and would benefit farmers.
The Congress leader further contended that the Governor’s address lacked mentions of upcoming government programs and failed to address critical issues such as unemployment, labor migration, and crimes against women. Mishra emphasized that Governors typically highlight the government’s proposed initiatives during their addresses, but this was notably absent in Das’s speech.
The walkout by Congress members signifies the growing tension and dissatisfaction within the opposition ranks regarding the state government’s communication and policies. As the budget session progresses, it remains to be seen how the opposition’s concerns will be addressed and whether the issues raised will lead to further debate and scrutiny in the legislative proceedings.
