Bhubaneswar Traffic Police Intensify Crackdown on Signal Jumping Ahead of Polls

Bhubaneswar: As the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections loom ahead in the state, Bhubaneswar Traffic Police have stepped up their efforts to curb traffic violations, particularly targeting those who flout signals.

Effective immediately, drivers caught jumping traffic signals will face severe penalties. Their driving licenses will be suspended for a duration of three months and they will be summoned to court.

Bhubaneswar Traffic DCP PK Rout, speaking to the media, disclosed that the first phase of the crackdown on traffic violators has been initiated at key intersections across the city. Locations such as AG Square, Jaydev Vihar Square, Laxmisagar Square, and Khandagiri Square are under heightened surveillance. The primary focus of the traffic police is on apprehending individuals who disregard red lights.

DCP Rout elaborated on the enforcement measures, stating that vehicles of the violators will be impounded, the driver’s license will be suspended, and they will be prosecuted in court. Additionally, recommendations will be made to the Regional Transport Office (RTO) for the suspension of driving licenses for three months in accordance with the law.

It is noteworthy that the Cuttack-Bhubaneswar Commissionerate Police have been actively engaged in conducting awareness campaigns on traffic regulations while also penalizing violators. Over the period spanning 2020 to 2023, a substantial sum of Rs 186.04 crore has been collected from individuals found contravening traffic laws.
