IMD Issues Cold Wave Warning for Odisha as Winter Grips the Region
Bhubaneswar: As winter tightens its grip on the region, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) regional centre in Odisha issued a cold wave warning for the first time this season. With cold and dry winds sweeping in from the north-west direction, the IMD predicts that several districts in North Interior Odisha are likely to experience cold wave conditions over the next two days.
The weather agency conveyed the advisory through its official communication platform, X (formerly Twitter), highlighting the potential impact of the cold wave. A yellow warning has been specifically issued for Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Deogarh, Keonjhar, and Angul districts, urging residents to take precautions as temperatures drop.
Notably, the mercury plummeted to 6 degrees Celsius in Kirei, Sundargarh district, in the last 24 hours, signaling the onset of chilly weather. In various other locations across the state, night temperatures fell below 12 degrees Celsius. Rourkela recorded 7.9 degrees Celsius, followed by Jharsuguda at 8 degrees, Sundargarh at 9 degrees, Angul at 10 degrees, Koraput at 10.1 degrees, Ranital in Bhadrak at 10.2 degrees, Keonjhar at 10.4 degrees, and Sambalpur and Phulbani at 11 degrees Celsius each.
Even the twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack experienced a dip in temperatures, recording 15 and 14 degrees Celsius, respectively, which is 1 and 0.8 degrees below the normal range. Several other regions in the state also registered below-normal temperatures.
This cold wave warning aligns with the IMD’s earlier prediction of a drop in night temperatures by 2-3 degrees Celsius within the next 48 hours. Residents and authorities are advised to stay informed and take necessary precautions to ensure the well-being of the community as winter conditions intensify.
