Phulbani: In a landmark judgment, a special Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) court in Phulbani has convicted and sentenced a perpetrator to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for the heinous crimes of kidnapping and raping a minor girl. The court’s decision also included hefty fines and compensation for the victim’s family.
The convicted individual, identified as Babul, was found guilty of luring and kidnapping the minor girl in February 2021, subsequently subjecting her to repeated acts of sexual assault under the guise of marriage. The prosecution built its case on the FIR filed by the victim’s family, prompting Phiringia police to take swift action, rescue the minor, and apprehend the perpetrator.
Public Prosecutor Asim Praharaj shed light on the gravity of the offenses, stating, “Apart from kidnapping and raping the minor girl, Babul had reportedly threatened the victim’s father with life.” The prosecution presented compelling evidence, including statements from 12 witnesses and the victim’s medical report, which played a pivotal role in securing the conviction.
The court’s verdict not only handed down a 20-year sentence of rigorous imprisonment to the accused but also imposed a fine of Rs 23,000. Additionally, in a significant move towards justice for the victim and her family, the court ordered the District Legal Services Authority to provide a compensation of Rs 6 lakh.
The sentencing reflects the severity with which the judiciary addresses crimes against minors, particularly cases of sexual exploitation and abuse. The stringent punishment serves as a deterrent against such reprehensible acts and underscores the commitment to safeguarding the rights and well-being of vulnerable individuals, especially children.
Furthermore, the court’s directive stipulates that failure to pay the imposed fine would result in an additional imprisonment of two years and three months, ensuring accountability and adherence to the rule of law.
The verdict stands as a testament to the efficacy of the legal system in holding perpetrators accountable and delivering justice to victims of sexual violence. It sends a clear message that perpetrators will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, while also providing crucial support and restitution to survivors and their families.
