In another self-immolation case in Odisha on Sunday, an inmate of Sundargarh Women’s College hostel attempted to end her life on Sunday by setting herself on fire. She is a Plus II 1st-year student and belongs to Ekatali village of Jharsuguda district, a spokesperson of the college said.

According to the dormitory officer Smita Rani Patel, the inmate, identified as Triveni Rohidas, sustained severe burn injuries from her waist up to the chest. She was initially rushed to Sundargarh district headquarters hospital (DHH) in critical condition and later was shifted to Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) in Burla after her condition deteriorated. She is undergoing treatment and still not out of danger, a doctor attending to her at VIMSAR said.

The superintendent of the hostel, Smitarani Patel, admitted that the incident took place but did not reveal the details.

According to a police source, all other inmates were busy with their own work as today was an off day. All of a sudden, the girl entered the bathroom of the hostel and set herself on fire. Later, hearing the girl’s screams, some inmates along with hostel staff rushed to the spot and rescued her and rushed to Sundargarh DHH.

The reason behind the girl taking such an extreme step is yet to be ascertained yet, police said.
