Odisha sizzles as 6 places record temperature over 40°C; Thunderstorm, Gusty Wind From April 22
Bhubaneswar: The mercury soared above 40 degrees Celsius at six places in Odisha, including Bhubaneswar, at 2.30 pm on Wednesday amid warnings of a heatwave for the next 48 hours.
Jharsuguda was the hottest at 43.2 degrees Celsius, followed by Bhubaneswar and Sambalpur at 42.8 degrees Celsius, Hirakud 41.6 degrees Celsius, Chandbali 40.6 degrees Celsius and Keonjhar 40 degrees Celsius.
According to the IMD’s midday bulletin, heat wave conditions are likely to prevail at one or two places in Khurda, Cuttack, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundergarh, Sambalpur, Sonpur, Boudh, Balangir, Deogarh and Angul till 8.30 am on Thursday.
Similar conditions will prevail at one or two places in Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundergarh, Sambalpur, Sonpur and Boudh during the next 24 hours.The Meteorological Department has also expressed the possibility of rain at some places in the state during this period. On April 22-23, a fresh Western Disturbance is likely to cause lightning and gusty winds with a speed of 30-40 kmph over many districts of the state.
The rains will also be more widespread from these days.While there will be no major change in the day temperature during the next 2 days, the mercury level will gradually drop by 2 to 4 degrees Celsius during the subsequent 3 days. The maximum temperature is likely to settle at 40 degree Celsius and at many places over Odisha it is likely to be 2-3 degrees above normal.
The IMD said that hot and humid weather conditions are very likely to continue during the next 1 to 2 days.At least 29 stations recorded temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, with Hamirpur in eastern Uttar Pradesh being the hottest place in the country along with Jharsuguda and Baripada (44.2). Baripada was six notches above normal, while Jharsuguda recorded a high of 3.8 notches above the average day temperature.
