Mid winter bird survey in Bhitarkanika National Park

Kendrapara, Jan 6: The Mid winter status survey of wetland bird -2023 will be taken up in five forest and wildlife ranges under Bhitarkanika National Park for a day on January 6, DFO of Rajnagar Mangrove Forest and wildlife Division Gopinath Sudarshan Yadav said.

Yadav said the field survey will be held at Kanika, Gahirmatha, Rajnagar,Mahakalapada and Kujanga Ranges within Bhitarkanika National park.

As many as 17 survey teams will be engaged in the mid winter wetland migratory bird status survey this year
The Bhitarkanika forest officials along with the renowned ornithologist, bird experts and researchers will conduct a bird status survey .

The forest officials generally count the avian species with the traditional method of “Direct Sighting “during the bird status survey. The wildlife researchers and ornithologists would use VHF handsets, binoculars ,GPS to count birds in the park.


Every year with the arrival of winter, Bhitarkanika water bodies, the abode of avian species, wore a colourful look .
Migratory birds fly thousands of miles to Bhitarakanika to escape the harsh winter in Siberia, Afghanistan, Iraq , northern Asia and some central European countries .

They generally stay in Bhitarkanika for about three- four months before starting their homeward journey from the park.
The Bhitarkanika is the transit point for the migratory bird species
As per the Mid winter waterfall bird status survey- 2022 report as many as 144 types of bird species with a population of estimated 1,38 ,107 had thronged to Bhitarkanika National Park in the last winter season.
