5,395 Lightning Strikes In 7 Minutes, in Odisha’s Koraput

Koraput: Inching closer to a record-high figure, Koraput witnessed 5,395 lightning strikes in just seven minutes  after a sudden change in weather condition in various parts of the district on Friday morning.

When the climate crisis with rainfall and thunderstorm since last three days, lightning occured at different places of the district and was more than all-time highest in Odisha. This information was revealed by the government’s lightning alert app ‘Damini’.

The lightning was reported mostly from Boipariguda, Jeypore, Koraput, Nandapur, Semiliguda and Lamataput areas. Earlier, the State had an all-time record of over 5,000 lightning occurring in a particular region in 30 minutes but lightning witnessed in Koraput today has surpassed the figure. As MeT department has issued yellow warning to Koraput for the next two days, there’s possibility of the lightning figures rising, official sources said.

Meanwhile, the district administration is awaiting a report from the Emergency department for an impact assessment of the lightning strikes.

O The earlier all-time record in Odisha was over 5,000 lightning occurring in a particular region in 30 minutes. The MeT department has issued yellow warning to Koraput for the next two days. So, there are possibilities of more lightning occurring in the district.
