JN.1 Variant Watch: Odisha Implements COVID Safety Measures

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government is closely monitoring the potential emergence of JN.1, a sub-variant of the Omicron variant of COVID-19, and is prepared to issue guidelines if necessary. As of now, Bijay Kumar Mohapatra, Director of Health Services, Odisha, has reassured the public that JN.1 has not been detected in the state. However, in the event of detection, the state will undertake genome sequencing to understand its implications.

According to Mohapatra, the state is following the advice of the Central government, maintaining surveillance over symptomatic cases. Presently, Odisha has sufficient beds and logistical support for the treatment of COVID-19 patients. Mohapatra emphasized the importance of immediate COVID testing for individuals experiencing symptoms.

The Union Ministry for Health issued an advisory on Monday addressing the recent surge in COVID-19 cases in certain states and Union Territories, along with the detection of the JN.1 sub-variant in Kerala. Union Health Secretary Sudhansh Pant urged states and UTs to stay vigilant and implement necessary public health measures to minimize the risk of increased transmission during the upcoming festive season.

As Odisha stays on high alert, the state’s health authorities remain proactive in their approach, aligning with national guidelines to curb the potential spread of the JN.1 sub-variant.
