Probes and probes at public exchequer but no light at the end of the tunnel

D N Singh

One would not know what is going in the name of probes over a political issue between the Centre and the AAP lasting over last six months. It cannot be said it were purely moral exigencies those such operations which cost a huge money from the exchequer.

Over an alleged  Excise scam and swindling the probe went on for days and months but still the probe team could not gather any substantive evidence to say Delhi Deputy Chief Minister, Manish Sisodia, had his fingers on any pie.

Once that is in animated suspense now new allegation has been made that, and the Ministry of Home Affairs( MHA has ordered another probe into alleged ‘snooping’ syndicate led by Sisodia to gather intelligence of several ministries and opposition leaders.

CBI had sought sanction to prosecute Delhi’s deputy CM in connection with the ‘Feedback Unit (FBU) snooping case’.

In a letter dated 17 February, the MHA granted sanction under Section 17 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 the LG of Delhi had also approved the investigations.

Worth a mention

It may be recalled that, so far 134 such allegations have been framed and investigations done but the probes have not been able to gather any evidence against Sisodia. And those were dismissed by the courts due to lack of evidence.

“What kind of pursuit is this that the BJP led Central government is after cases those led to no end after so much efforts and financial splurge on probes” wonders a BJP insider who sought anonymity .

Asked if the steps are politically motivated? the insider refused to elaborate further.

This preoccupation with settling scores and seeking to influence the pace and direction of change is an inevitable feature of the major reconfiguration of political forces underway. But there is a danger that if vengeance is allowed to fester, the need for unity and cooperation in the name of the general goodwill be obscured.
