Manipur will be BJP’s Achilles heel: TMC

Kolkata, June 14 : Taking a swipe at the BJP, the Trinamool Congress on Wednesday said Manipur will be the Achilles heel of the saffron party and mark the beginning of its inevitable downfall.
The TMC also accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah of abandoning their “Raj Dharma” of restoring peace in the state.
“The mishandling of the situation, divisive actions and failure to restore peace demonstrate BJP’s ineptitude and disregard for the people’s welfare, ” the party tweeted.
Stating that Manipur is going to be the Achilles heel of the BJP as it marks the beginning of its inevitable downfall, the party said, “This signals a egregious FAILURE of @BJP4India’s DOUBLE ENGINE govt.”
Over the past few years, the BJP has repeatedly sought vote for establishing double engine governments – those run by the same party at the centre and the state.
Holding Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh responsible for the violence, the Trinamool said “several of the triggers that led to the outbreak of violence could have been avoided” had he acted cautiously in the in the “conflict-ridden state”.
“Instead, his actions came across as divisive and clearly aimed at wooing the majority community for the sake of votes, ” it commented.
“Because nothing has come of the peace talks in the last seven years which leads one to question whether initiating peace talks was no more than a electoral strategy to win over the community for the 2017 elections, ” the party averred.
“Because PM @narendramodi and HM @AmitShah have abandoned their ‘Raj Dharma’ of focusing on restoring peace in violence-hit Manipur by undoing all the gaffes it made in the recent past to polarise the polity of the state, ” it said.
The TMC said nine people, including a woman, have been killed in the past 24 hours following fresh violence.
“The deaths took place in an incident of firing late night in Khamenlok area, according to sources in the army. So far, ethnic clashes have claimed about 100 lives, left many more injured and displaced thousands, ” the party added.
