Imphal, Sep 27 : Over 90 students sustained injuries as protests continued on Wednesday over the killing of two school students in Manipur, while the state government ordered closure of all educational institutes to control the situation, sources said,
A CBI team led by Special Director Ajay Bhatnagar arrived here to enquire into the case of the “kidnapping and killing” of the two school students – a boy and a girl – by militants. The state government had ordered a CBI probe in August after the students went missing.
With the protests intensifying, the government also suspended mobile internet services on Tuesday.
A large number of students came out shouting slogans over the twin killings by suspected militants. Hijam Linthoinganbi and Phijam Hemanjit, both residents of Imphal, were overpowered by some militants on July 6.
The whereabouts of the two students were not known until some photographs taken during their captivity emerged in various social media platforms on Monday. Two armed militants were also seen in a viral photo reportedly taken moments before the children were killed.
Protests intensified as students, including girls, were allegedly manhandled by police and Rapid Action force personnel. The sources said the security personnel fired tear gas shells to bring the situation under control. The violence intensified as protestors blocked roads using burnt tyres and wood.
Over 33 persons including a former journalist were reported missing after the Manipur crisis started on May 3
.
Meanwhile, state Congress President K Meghachandra visited various hospitals in the state to enquire about the health of the injured protesting students. He also met the family members of both the students who were killed by militants.
State BJP President A Sharda condemned the killings of two students and demanded punishment of those involved in the killings.
