Cong using crime against women as instrument to settle political scores: Smriti

New Delhi, July 24 :Union Minister Smriti on Irani slammed the Congress party for not allowing Parliament to function over the issue of Manipur and alleged that it must stop using crime against women as an instrument to settle political scores.

“Congress is running away from discussion on Manipur as they know they will have to answer on crimes against women in their states but I want to appeal to stop using crime against women as instruments to settle political scores” she said while holding a press conference here at party headquarters.

The Minister also appealed to the opposition to come for the discussion over the Manipur issue.

“I appeal to the opposition to let Manipur issue be discussed. The people of the country send us to Parliament by electing us so that we can discuss serious issues” she added.

Smriti remarks came after the Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Lok Sabha said that the government is ready for a discussion on the Manipur issue.

‘I am ready for a discussion on the issue in the house, but I don’t know why the opposition doesn’t want that discussion to take place,” Shah said.

Amid uproar by Opposition members on the third day of the monsoon session of Parliament over the Manipur issue, the Lok Sabha was adjourned till 11 am on Tuesday.

The opposition has constantly demanded for discussion on the Manipur situation in Parliament and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s statement on this issue.

Meanwhile, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Opposition demand for the PM’s statement on the Manipur issue in Parliament said that ,”The PM is accountable to the Parliament… There is no parliamentary democracy in the world, and the members of Parliament doesn’t have the chance to meet, question and hear from the PM. This is a bizarre position they have taken”.

Today, the proceedings of the house began, amid pandemonium, on the Manipur issue as the opposition was demanding a detailed discussion on the issue.

Several opposition MPs raised slogans in the house over the Manipur issue.
