Happy Pana Sankranti and Odia New Year: Prez, PM & Naveen Extend Greetings

Pana Sankranti is the traditional new year festival day of Odia people in Odisha. It is also known as Maha Bishuba Sankranti. The Odia people on this day visit temples, especially Hanuman temples, as it is the birthday of Lord Hanuman too.  

The day symbolizes the arrival of a new year by offering prayers to God and Goddesses and by fulfilling some unique traditions. Pana Sankranti is celebrated with visits to Shiva, Shakti, and Hanuman temples. People take baths in major pilgrimage centers. Feasts and special drink Pana is prepared.

Devotees also perform special puja on the occasion, which is also celebrated as the birth anniversary of Lord Hanuman.

In Puri, traditional wrestlers come out of the Jaga Ghara, Akhadas (training homes) and gymnasiums to showcase their wrestling skills after worship of Lord Hanuman.

Devotees throng temples across the state on the occasion and take baths in rivers or major pilgrimage centers.

President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Naveen Patnaik and other eminent personalities on Friday extended greetings and best wishes to all on the auspicious occasion of Maha Bishuba Sankranti and Odia New Year.

Taking to Twitter, the President spoke about the importance of Pana Sankranti and wrote, “My heartfelt greetings and best wishes to my dear brothers and sisters of Odisha on this Odia New Year.”

Extending greetings, PM Modi wrote, “Best wishes for Maha Bishuba Pana Sankranti and Odia New Year. May the new year bring abundance of happiness and good health. May all your wishes be fulfilled in the coming year.”

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik also extended wishes and wrote, “My heartiest greetings and best wishes to all on the occasion of the Holy Maha Bishuba Sankranti and Odia New Year. With the blessings of Mahaprabhu Shri Jagannath, this new year may bring new opportunities and possibilities for everyone.”

Union Home Minister Amit Shah wrote, “Wishing the people of Odisha a happy and prosperous Maha Vishuba Sankranti. May the blessings of Mahaprabhu Jagannath be the guide on everyone’s paths. May the sweet taste of Pana fill people’s lives.”

Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan also wished all on the occasion and wrote, “Hearty greetings on the auspicious occasion of Maha Bishuba Sankranti and Odia New Year. May the New Year bring joy and happiness to everyone’s life. I pray that with the blessings of Lord Jagannath, Odia community may prosper and Odisha reach the pinnacle of achievement.”
